Alma Books is launching a new series of low-priced classics, and will be the first publisher in the UK to use printer CPI’s new 3D embossing effect on its covers.
Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë, Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert, The Prince by Machiavelli and Erasmus’ Praise of Folly will be the first titles in the Alma Evergreens range, publishing in September. Each will be priced at £4.99 and include additional introductions, photos and biographical information.
M.d. Alessandro Gallenzi said Alma—voted Independent Publisher of the Year at the Bookseller Industry Awards—is intending to release 10 Evergreens per year, with the price a response to the sensitivity of the classics market. He said: “It has always been our ambition to be a fully-fledged classics publisher.”
The printing technology means areas of the covers will appear to be 3D, as CPI applies layers of spot UV varnish. Gallenzi said it would add to the quality and perceived value of the books.
