Arts Council England is to link up with independent publisher Route to find "Yorkshire’s next great author".
It has launched a competition for 18-30-year-old aspiring authors with the prize of a book deal for the winner. Applicants, who must be living in Yorkshire, should apply including a synopsis and sample text up to 10,000 words by 31st May.
The Damned United author David Peace said: "As the major London publishing houses close their doors and eyes to unsolicited manuscripts this opening provides a rare opportunity for young unpublished novelists to have their work actually read and considered for publication.
"I hope it will become an annual event and that other regions will follow its example but, most of all, that it will provide extra motivation and inspiration for young writers in our area."
Route is also offering the chance for an 18-30-year-old to take part in a mentoring programme for editors/publishers. Applicants must enter by 31st March.
