Abrams snaps up SelfMadeHero

US art and illustrated publisher Abrams has announced it is to buy London-based graphic novel publisher SelfMadeHero, in a move that will see the SelfMadeHero imprint launched in the US.

The purchase will be finalised in the next few weeks. Managing director Emma Hayley, who launched SelfMadeHero in 2007, will stay on in her role following the sale. Marketing director Doug Wallace will also continue in his role. Distribution in the UK and export markets will be handled by UK-based Abrams & Chronicle Books from April 2012.

The North American list, launching in spring 2012, will be published under the SelfMadeHero imprint in North America and in the UK, with titles including Chico & Rita by Fernando Trueba and Javier Mariscal, Kiki de Montparnasse by Catel & Bocquet and But I Really Wanted to Be an Anthropologist by Margaux Motin.

SelfMadeHero publishes series including Manga Shakespeare, Graphic Biography, Eye Classics and Crime Classics. In spring 2012 it will publish two new series: Graphic Freud and Graphic History. It currently publishes 20 titles a year in the UK.
