US Snaps up Janklow & Nesbit prizewinner

Literary agency Janklow & Nesbit has secured a six-figure US publishing deal for Snapper by Brian Kimberling, the inaugural winner of its new literary prize, the Janklow & Nesbit Bath Spa Prize.

The prize, first awarded at the end of last summer, will be given annually to the best piece of work produced by a student on the Bath Spa MA in Novel Writing, with the prize comprising an award of £1,500 and the offer of representation to the winning student.

J&N agent Tim Glister sold North American rights to American author Kimberling's prize-winning novel to Tim O'Connell at Pantheon in a six-figure, pre-emptive two-book deal on Friday (10th February). The agency is aiming to secure a UK deal ahead of London Book Fair this year.

J&N agent Will Francis said: "We've had quite a long history of having a relationship with Bath Spa. In terms of the number of students who go on to have book deals, I think Bath Spa is certainly one of the strongest . . .

"From our point of view, it makes sense to do the prize if they are a dominant force, and it presents the opportunity for us to see the stuff coming off the course a bit earlier."
