Heinemann has bought a debut novel from award winning Canadian poet Patrick Lane. Publishing director Jason Arthur bought UK and Commonwealth rights, excluding Canada, from Judith Murray at Greene & Heaton.
Red Dog, Red Dog is described as "an epic novel of unrequited dreams". Set in the mid-1950s, it focuses on a troubled family living within a small community in British Columbia.
Lane has won awards for his poetry and an earlier memoir, and Red Dog, Red Dog is already shortlisted for Canada's Giller Prize.
Heinemann, part of the Random House Group, will publish it in hardback in May 2009, with a Windmill paperback following in 2010.
