Celebrating poetry's young
The Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award 2008 will be announced on National Poetry Day, 9th October, when 100 young poets will be coming to London to receive their prizes. Fifteen overall winners from all over the UK will also be reading their poems.
The Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award is a unique competition organised by The Poetry Society to discover young poets (aged 11-17) and help them develop their talents to become professional poets of the future. This year – the 11th year of the Award - the Poetry Society received over 12,000 entries from the UK and around the world.
The 2008 judges are poet and broadcaster Ian McMillan and poet Eva Salzman. There are two prizes for different age-groups: the 15-17 year olds will get the chance to attend a week-long residential course at one of the prestigious Arvon Centres, where they will be tutored by this year’s judges. The younger age-range winners (11-14 years old) will win a school poetry residency and individual monitoring session.
