Shadowy deal for RHCB

Clare Argar, editor at Random House Children's Books, has acquired an action-adventure series from Paul Adam, previously a writer of thrillers for adults. Argar bought world rights in a three-book pre-empt from Simon Trewin at United Agents, for a "significant" sum.

The series is described as "Alex Rider meets Houdini", and its hero is 14-year-old Max Cassidy, a schoolboy by day but a daring escapologist by night. In the first book, Shadow Island, Max follows a clue to the disappearance of his father and stumbles on a shocking truth.

Argar said the series was going to be "action-packed and brilliantly exciting", adding: "Its USP is the way Paul combines the excitement and thrills with serious issues such as environmental corruption and global conspiracies."

Shadow Island will be published in July 2009.
