Melbourne is Unesco City of Literature
Melbourne has been named the second Unesco City of Literature, three days before the opening of the Melbourne Writers Festival. Edinburgh became the first City of Literature chosen by the United Nations' cultural arm in 2004.
According to Australia's the Age newspaper, Unesco responded to an ambitious bid by the Victoria state government that had as its centrepiece the establishment of the Centre for Books and Ideas at the State Library of Victoria.
Arts Minister Lynne Kosky said the decision was confirmation of the value of many people who work in the literature industry, including writers, publishers and those who support writing and publishing.
