Bawdy Tintin removed from French shelves
A bawdy version of one of Tintin's most famous tales which suggests that the intrepid reporter was a voracious womaniser has been withdrawn from the shelves, notes the Telegraph.
The Pink Lotus, written by a Spanish author, Antonio Altarriba, depicts the youthful Belgian as a dissolute tabloid journalist in his 30s undergoing a mid-life crisis. Based on The Blue Lotus, the book was published last year to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the birth of Georges Remi. The author's estate took exception to the updated version, claiming it "perverted the essence of the personality" of Tintin. It put pressure on the publishers of The Pink Lotus, Edicions de Ponent, and its distributors to ensure it would never appear in bookshops again.

While part of me abhors any kind of censorship, I have some sympathy with Remi's descendents. Expanding the lives of literary characters who are not the writers own is, I believe a valid practice but the writer should not degrade the original. Having said that, who is the judge?18 Aug 08 09:55
