Steinbeck works returned to Penguin
A federal appeals court in New York has reversed a ruling that awarded the son and granddaughter of John Steinbeck the rights to 10 of his works, including The Grapes of Wrath, the Associated Press reported.
According to the appeals court, a lower court judge made a mistake by giving the rights to Thomas Steinbeck, the author’s son, and Blake Smyle, his granddaughter.
Penguin Group and the heirs of John Steinbeck’s widow, Elaine, previously held the rights. The appeals court ordered the lower court judge to rule in favour of the publishing company and the heirs of Elaine Steinbeck, who died in April 2003. John Steinbeck died in 1968.
