The Christopher Little Literary Agency has crowned student Ishani Kar-Purkayastha the winner of its CLLA award, which is open to students in the final term of City University's MA in creative writing (novels) course.
Kar-Purkayastha won with Moyna's Stolen Dances, which is set in 1980s Calcutta and tells the story of a boy living with two souls.
The City University course requires students to complete a novel and is entirely focused on novel-writing. The prize was launched last year.
Harriett Gilbert, programme director of the MA in Creative Writing (Novels), said: “Kar-Purkayastha’s novel is strange, tender, funny and moving – and I’m delighted at its receiving this endorsement from the industry. I’m also grateful to CLLA for providing feedback to all those students who submitted their novel for the award.”
