Military might to Transworld

Transworld has bought UK and Commonwealth rights, including Canada, to a new book about the complete history of the British army, from the Battle of Edgehill to conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Called The Making of the British Army and written by Daily Telegraph columnist Allan Mallinson, it will be published in early 2009. Transworld publishing director Selina Walker bought the rights from Maggie Phillips at Ed Victor for an undisclosed sum.

Beginning with the Battle of Edgehill in 1642 and the subsequent formation of Oliver Cromwell’s New Model Army, the book will tell of the army through the centuries, culminating in modern wars in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Walker said the book was a “huge undertaking”.

“It’s very timely, given our interest in today’s soldiers and their situation overseas,” she said. “With his own army background, and his talent for military history and dramatic narrative which is so evident in his Hervey series of novels, Allan is one of the very few authors who can do justice to such a book.”
