Unsworth back at Hutchinson
14.07.08 Alison Flood
Booker Prize-winning author Barry Unsworth's new novel has been acquired by Caroline Gascoigne, publishing director of Hutchinson. The novel, Land of Marvels, was acquired from Vivien Green of Sheil Land and will be published next January. The move sees Unsworth return to Hutchinson, which published his first novel in 1966.
Unsworth's latest novel, The Ruby in her Navel, was published by Penguin last year.
Gascoigne said: "Barry Unsworth has long been one of my favourite authors, and I am thrilled that a writer of such distinction is joining Hutchinson. He has the greatest gift for bringing history alive, and Land of Marvels, set in Mesopotamia in 1914, glitteringly focuses on the power struggles of a fascinating cast of characters – archaeologists, engineers and empire builders - at a key moment in 20th century history."
Unsworth added: "I am happy to be returning to the Hutchinson fold after a long and wandering absence; it was they who published my first novel in 1966, thus giving me the memorable experience of seeing my name in print for the first time. It is a great stroke of luck to have Caroline Gascoigne as my publisher, someone who I know believes in my work and will do all she can to help it forward."
