Reidy: 'positive but guarded'

The mood at Simon & Schuster in the US is "still very positive; positive but guarded", given the current economic climate, according to c.e.o. Carolyn Reidy.

In the first of a new series of lunchtime interviews with "movers and shakers in the book world" in the Los Angeles Times, Reidy talked about the "high stakes game" of finding the next bestseller.

"In New York's publishing houses, all of our lists have authors we thought would achieve bestselling consistency but who never got there," Reidy told the LA Times. "You can always tell in the beginning how marketable an author is. The big question is whether they'll truly reach that level and whether they do it consistently, over and over."

She added that S&S had several big titles on the horizon. Reidy is banking on titles from Mehmet Oz and Michael Roizen, an autumn book from Bob Woodward and novels from Jodi Picoult and Vince Flynn.
