Roar deal for Little Tiger Press

Picture book publisher Little Tiger Press is investing in former Waterstone's children's manager George Grey's start-up, Roar Publishing.

The deal, which follows a model Little Tiger has established with novelty publisher Caterpillar Books and young fiction publisher Stripes, will see it acquiring an unspecified interest in Roar. It will handle sales, marketing and publicity for the list in conjunction with A & C Black's field sales team, which already handles Little Tiger's picture book sales. Distribution is by MDL.

Roar would remain completely independent, said Grey, but would have support from Little Tiger for its PR, marketing and sales operations. Its first two projects, Dinosaur and America: The Making of a Nation, will launch this autumn, with America launching only in the US. Both are high-end novelty non-fiction titles.

"My other projects will be of the same ilk for now, but I still plan to extend into fiction and picture books," said Grey. He will publish another three titles in 2009 and has appointed an editorial director, Stephanie Stansbie, who joins in July.

Little Tiger's relationships with Caterpillar Books and Stripes extended its picture book material into new formats, including Caterpillar's novelty list and Stripes' young fiction titles, which both use material and characters from Little Tiger's picture books.
