Hg2 starts food fight

Hg2, publisher of Hedonist’s Guides, is planning to shake up the restaurant guidebook sector with two new autumn releases. A Hedonist’s Guide to . . . Eat London and Eat New York (both £9.99) will be based on Hg2’s surveys of 150 chefs, restaurateurs, sommeliers and other food industry experts. The books will list their most recommended restaurants and tips for different eating occasions, and will seek to direct readers to both lesser-known and also renowned eating places.

Hg2’s founder and m.d. Tremayne Carew Pole said the pocket-sized guides would be scaled-down versions of Hg2’s previous Hedonist’s Guides, retaining their sleek design and production values. Each entry will be accompanied by photos and details of who recommended it.

The books will compete with long-running restaurant guides from Zagat and Harden’s, both of which are based on recommendations from readers. “Zagats and Harden’s rely on public opinion, but these will be the first insiders’ guides to these cities’ restaurants,” Carew Pole said.

Publicity campaigns are planned around the books’ choice of top restaurants on their launch in October. Carew Pole said Hg2 would seek to build a restaurant series with guides to other cities.
