HarperCollins has triumphed in The Bookseller Fives, the annual five-a-side football tournament for the publishing industry. The HarperCollins team beat distributor Central Books 2-1 in the Cup final, at the culmination of Saturday's competition.
HarperCollins topped their group and then went on to beat Profile Books, Waterstone's and SBS Worldwide to reach the Bookseller Fives final. The Book People, champions for the previous two years, were knocked out by Penguin 3-2 in the quarter finals. Penguin's mixed sex team was undefeated throughout the tournament, but went out in a semi-final penalty shoot out against Central Books.
In the secondary Plate competition Magnum Book Services took home the trophy. The Magnum team eliminated Waterstone's, Informa, the Copyright Licensing Agency and Wolters Kluwer.
Player of the Tournament was Matt Accisson of Central Books, who narrowly beat Sunny Baines of Waterstone's and Steve Fordham of SBS to the accolade.
The Golden Boot went to Brian Muirhead of Central Books who scored 12 goals. Mohammed Dellai, also of Central, scored 11, while Mike McNulty of Informa racked up 10 goals.
It was the 10th annual Bookseller Fives tournament, played in glorious sunshine in North London. Other teams to compete included Random House, Wiley, Borders and Heinemann.
