Guitarist slides into fiction with new CD

Guitarist Ry Cooder has written a 104-page novella to accompany “I, Flathead”, the last album in his “California Trilogy”. The album is by the fictional musician Kash Buk and his band the Klowns, characters in Cooder’s novella of the same name.

The album and novella will be released together on 23rd June by Nonesuch/Perro Verde Records as a hardback book with a CD wallet inside. According to Nonesuch, it will be stocked by Amazon, HMV, Borders and any independent bookshops unopposed to music product, but not Waterstone’s. It is expected to retail for around £15.99.

The “California Trilogy” is Cooder’s exploration of the real and imagined history of California; the first two albums are “Following Chávez Ravine” and “My Name is Buddy”.

Marketing and publicity for the novella and album will include press advertising in Mojo, Uncut, the Word, Songlines and the Guardian. A promotional e-card will be sent out to Nonesuch’s UK database, and Nonesuch expects widespread press coverage in the national newspapers and music press to coincide with the release. It also anticipates “major” support from BBC Radio 2, Radio 3, Radio 4, and BBC World Service.
