Sainsbury's unveils new book look
22.05.08 John Ryan
Sainsbury's has unveiled a new-look books department in its Sydenham superstore as part of a general overhaul of its non-food area. With an emphasis on table-displayed stock and lifestyle graphics, the intention is to move away from the traditional supermarket method of selling books.
David Wright, a spokesman for Dalziel + Pow, the design company that created the non-food areas for the branch, said: "The whole thing with the non-food area was to take influences from the high street and to take a step away from the usual grid that is used in a supermarket. We wanted to create a shopping environment that would give customers a change of pace with low and high areas."
The revamped book area is part of a trial, which if it proves successful, is likely to be taken more generally across the chain. Plans are in place for nine stores to receive a similar treatment this year.
