Martin Townsend wins Mind award

Sunday Express editor Martin Townsend has won this year's Mind Book of the Year Award for The Father I Had (Corgi).

The book is an account of growing up with a father diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and according to Michèle Roberts, who was on the judging panel, it is "a very honest and compassionate book". She also said that the entrants to the prize were getting better every year. "More and more, publishers are recognising the importance of the Mind prize," she added. The other judges were Fay Weldon and Blake Morrison.

Awards were also presented for Mind Journalist of the Year, which went to Society Guardian journalist Mary O'Hara, Mind Student Journalist of the Year, which was awarded to Huw Davies of the University of Cardiff newspaper Gair Rhydd for his article on Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and Mind Champion of the year, which went to Dr Liz Miller for her work in the field of mental health.
