Fannin defends Scottish spend

Scottish trade body Publishing Scotland, attacked by Birlinn last week over how it spends its public grant, has laid out how it will use the additional £60,000 awarded to it for 2009 by the Scottish Arts Council.

PS c.e.o. Lorraine Fannin said the money would be put towards international development to increase the sale of Scottish book rights overseas, including upping Scottish presence at trade fairs; towards training and research for a digital development fund in Scotland; and towards research on changes in UK trade.

"This work was agreed in consultation with groups of publisher members," Fannin said, stressing that although the SAC cut back £50,000 from funds to publishers for the current financial year, PS did not get its uplift in funds for the same financial year, nor from the same budget.
