Crockatt and Powell open new shop
07.05.08 Graeme Neill
South London independent Crockatt and Powell will open its second store this Saturday (10th May) in west London. The shop will open facing the site of the old Pan Bookshop in Fulham Road. Pan closed its doors in January and Waterstone’s also closed its Old Brompton Road branch in November, leaving no bookshops in the area.
Co-owner Adam Powell said the new shop has 800 square feet of trading space and will stock around 7,000 titles. “We will still have quite a lot of fiction and travel guides but there will also be a big emphasis on children’s books, which will be in a separate room,” he said.
Both Powell and co-owner Matthew Crockatt worked at the Pan Bookshop. The new shop will employ two ex-employees of the independent, Stuart Snelson and Jane McMorland Hunter, along with one other bookseller. “Matthew always dreamed of getting our hands on Pan,” said Powell. “But there was a great site opposite so we felt we had to do it. It’s a certain gamble but we know the market. There’s a great book reading community there so it’s a bit of a no brainer.”
