Quercus buys Irish newcomer
Quercus has signed a two-book deal for world rights with Julia Kelly, who recently won the Irish Book Awards' best Irish newcomer title for With My Lazy Eye.
Quercus will publish this book as a paperback original in September, and Kelly's second novel will be published in 2009. The publisher will also release the Irish paperback in June, and there has been "much international interest".
With My Lazy Eye is the story of troubled Lucy’s coming of age in 1980s Dublin. She is also struggling with a sight defect which worsens until her whole life reaches crisis point.
It is not an autobiographical novel but there has been media speculation that there are elements of Kelly's own life incorporated into the book.
Marianne Gunn O’Connor, Kelly's agent said: "Julia Kelly is a mesmerising, beautiful and evocative new voice in Irish literary fiction. She is an absolute find. I’m delighted to be working with Quercus and especially with Jon Riley who is the perfect editor to nurture this very gifted writer."
