Polish picture pick

Picture book publisher Winged Chariot Press is to launch what founder Neal Hoskins says is the UK’s first Polish picture book title, following demand from libraries and schools.

The picture book, Pink Piglet by Marcin Brykczynski and Joanna Olech (p/b, £9, 20th May) will be translated into English, with the Polish text available online and a downloadable reading of the book in Polish to come at a later date.

“There are large Polish communities in several towns, with up to one million Polish people now living in the UK,” said Hoskins. “Libraries ask for books both in Polish and from Poland, to show that they are reflecting the needs of their local communities, but this is the first picture book from Poland to be published here.”

Hoskins said that the company had to look “long and hard” for a Polish title with a contemporary feel that would also suit the UK market. Pink Piglet will feature as a Blackwell Book of the Month in June.
The move follows Borders’ introduction last year of a Polish language section to its stores. Adult publishers Mills & Boon, Macmillan Audio and Berlitz have all launched Polish ranges in the last year, targeting the influx of Poles coming to work in the UK.
