HMV trials networking site
HMV, the music and book retailer, is secretly testing the first stage of its long-awaited social networking site as it looks to increase its presence in cyberspace. Named 'Get Closer', the site is currently being tested by 1,000 users prior to a full launch on 1st September.
The site allows users to import music and film files and create their own library. They will be connected to other users with similar tastes to form so-called 'spider clouds' around the artists, genres or films that they have in common.
Simon Fox, HMV's chief executive, said that the site is more about developing connections, discovering and sharing new music than social networking in the traditional sense. "We will then match you up with similar people. It's all about connections and collections," he said.
