22.04.08 Anna Richardson
ITV3 has commissioned a 10-part comedy drama adaptation of Ladies of Letters by Carole Hayman and Lou Wakefield.
The series is based on the long-running Radio 4 radio shows, starring Prunella Scales and Patricia Routledge, of correspondence between two widows who meet at a wedding reception. The popular series is accompanied by paperback editions by Time Warner, among others, and audiobooks format through BBC Audiobooks.
The new series will star Maureen Lipman and Anne Reid, and was adapted for television by Hayman and Wakefield, the authors of the original source books and the radio series. It is the first comedy commission for ITV3. It is provisionally scheduled as a ten-part series, with production starting this summer.
Emma Tennant, controller of ITV3, said: “Ladies of Letters is a fantastically successful brand with a dedicated and loyal following of both the books and radio series. As such, ITV3 is hugely proud for this 10-part series to be our first comedy drama commission, particularly with two such great actors taking the lead roles.”
