Thrills for Mr Nice
Patrick Walsh of Conville & Walsh is finalising a deal with Geoff Mulligan of Harvill Secker for three thrillers from one-time drugs king Howard Marks. Mulligan was the editor for Mr Nice, Marks' bestselling memoir of his criminal days, and for the sequel, Señor Nice.
Walsh said Marks was being described as "a Welsh Rankin" and called his début thriller, The Cult, "an unorthodox police procedural and psychological thriller, with echoes of Nicci French". The story involves a young policewoman resting from her career and finding herself drawn into an investigation.
Walsh said the hope is that the series will be a long-running one, with Marks writing a novel a year for the next decade. "Howard's media profile has suddenly rocketed," he added, citing television appearances including "Celebrity Late Night Poker". The deal is expected to be finalised "at the end of the week".
