Benazir's niece sells Bhutto story

David Godwin of DGA is selling a family memoir from Benazir Bhutto's 25-year-old niece, Fatima Bhutto. Godwin has a 12-page proposal for the as-yet-untitled family memoir of Pakistan's political dynasty, and Bhutto will be in London later this week to meet potential publishers. Canadian rights in the book have already sold to David Davidar at Penguin Canada.

"It's the story of her family from the inside--she is the most remarkable woman with an extraordinary story to tell," said Godwin. "Fatima's grandfather [prime minister Zulfika Ali Bhutto] was executed by General Zia, her uncle was murdered in the South of France, her father [Murtaza Bhutto] was killed outside the house where they lived in Karachi, and last year her aunt Benazir was assassinated. It's a tragedy of Shakespearean proportions, a family ravaged by death and division."

Fatima was estranged from her aunt Benazir. Godwin said she "believes Benazir was the death of her father, and part of the book will be an investigatation into whether that was the case."

In an article in this month's Harper's Bazaar, Fatima Bhutto says she will not follow the family tradition and go into politics, preferring to promote change in Pakistan as a writer and activist.
