Scheffler moves from gruffalos to cats
01.04.08 Tom Tivnan
Faber has signed up The Gruffalo illustrator Axel Scheffler to illustrate a new edition of T S Eliot's classic children's poem Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats. Julia Wells bought world rights directly from the author.
Originally published in 1939, there have been two previous illustrated editions of the book, the first by Nicolas Bentley in 1940 and the other by Edward Gorey in 1982. Faber will publish in September 2009, during Faber's 80th anniversary year and the book's 70th.
Stephen Page, Faber c.e.o. said: "Axel has agreed to create a new classic edition of Eliot's timeless poems. He was our first choice and it is already clear that he is creating a new edition that will be as lasting, thrilling and appropriate at Bentley and Gorey."
