Davis trumps Scardino in salary stakes
Reed Elsevier chief executive Crispin Davis was paid more than £2m in 2007, after receiving an annual bonus worth more than his annual wage. Davis' bonus was £1.3m, more than doubling his 2007 salary of £1.1m. In 2006 Davis earned just over £2m.
Davis £2.4m wage took him above Pearson chief executive Marjorie Scardino in the high earner stakes. Scardino took home a total of £2.3m last year, up 19% from her £1.96m in 2006. John Makinson, the head of the Penguin books business, received £1.4m, up from £1.3m in 2006.
Last week, The Bookseller Salary and Benefits Survey 2008 survey found that those in publishing are paid an average of £26,577, while those working in libraries earn an average of £24,090. Booksellers are the worst off, earning an average of £17,500. W H Smith c.e.o. Kate Swann earned £1.4m in the year ended August 2007.
