18.03.08 Anna Richardson
Bobby Charlton has beaten strong opposition, including Ladbrokes favourite Jackie Stewart, at this year’s National Sporting Club British Sports Book Awards, to take home the best autobiography crown. Charlton’s My Manchester United Years, saw off Stewart’s Winning is Not Enough, Sid Waddell’s Bellies and Bullseyes, Lawrence Dallaglio’s It’s In the Blood, Joe Calzaghe’s No Ordinary Joe and Neil Warnock’s Made in Sheffield to secure the accolade.
Other winners at the awards, which were announced today (18th March), include In Search of Robert Millar by Richard Moore for best biography; best new writer Mark Law for The Pyjama Game; Goodbye Gay Meadow by Matthew Ashton for best illustrated title; last year’s William Hill Sports Book of the year winner, Provided You Don’t Kiss Me by Duncan Hamilton in the football book category; Ripley’s World by Andy Ripley in rugby; and More than a Game by John Major as best cricket book.
