Art and travel from Quadrille
17.03.08 Tom Tivnan
Illustrated publisher Quadrille is launching a series of "glossy and stylish" travel books that explore cities through their art. The Art in the City series launches with titles on London and Paris (both p/b, £9.99, 18th April). Quadrille said that the series, which will focus primarily on contemporary and modern art, would appeal to those new to the art world, but particularly to seasoned gallery-goers "for whom the Rough Guide or a Lonely Planet isn't going to be enough, especially if you want to go off the beaten track".
Series editor Anne Furniss said: "Art in the City fills a huge gap in the city-break travel market. It introduces the reader to the full spectrum of modern and contemporary art." The books have been written by Tiddy Rowan, a former gallery owner and art consultant, with the help of curators from Tate Britain and the Centre Pompidou. Rowan's At Home with Art was published by Quadrille in 2006. Each guide opens with an essay on the current contemporary art scene by a local art expert in that city, and an introduction that presents the art in the context of the city's history and geography. The bulk of the book is an A–Z guide to 100 artists, with an example of their art and where their works can be seen.
Quadrille is aiming to bring out two titles a year, with guides to New York and Berlin scheduled for spring 2009. Other cities in the pipeline are Venice, San Francisco, Tokyo and Sydney
