Getting stuck into UK publishers

Scribe publisher Henry Rosenbloom got stuck into British publishers at Adelaide Writers' Week over the question of territorial publishing rights, reports the Age. He claimed they were restricting local publishing by insisting on Commonwealth rights when they bought US books for the British market, and not buying Australian titles that have already been published here.

But according to a couple of other Melbourne publishers, Rosenbloom's point is an old one. Sandy Grant, boss of Hardie Grant, says things shifted substantially 10 years ago and rights "have been going one way for years - global. For years holding global rights has been clearly the only secure long-term strategy and this is being rapidly accelerated by digital developments, European Union law, as well as Amazon etc".
