RSPB flies beyond birds

The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds is extending its brand from ornithology titles to general wildlife guides.
A&C Black, which publishes RSPB-branded titles, has Peter Holden and Geoffrey Abbott's Handbook of Garden Wildlife lined up for July (p/b, £9.99). The book is designed as a companion to its established title, Handbook of British Birds, and will cover the various types of animal, insect, wildflower, garden plant and tree likely to be found alongside garden birds. It will be illustrated with 450-plus colour photographs.
A title for children will follow in September: My First Book of Garden Wildlife by Mike Unwin (h/b, £6.99), which introduces 20 common garden animals, birds and insects to young readers. It will be published alongside the reissue of a more traditional RSPB title: Children's Guide to Birdwatching by David Chandler and Mike Unwin (p/b, £6.99).
A & C Black publicity director Rosanna Bortoli described the development as "a logical progression", and added: "Birds and other wildlife are interdependent and you can't divorce one from the other."
