John Lewis cuts back on fiction
06.03.08 Graeme Neill
John Lewis is cutting back on the range of fiction it stocks in the face of increasing competition from supermarkets and high street chains. The move is understood to stem from the store's increasing inability to meet its "Never Knowingly Undersold" promise.
John Lewis' book buying department said in a statement: "We are in fact buying less fiction as we want to use our floor space more effectively with books that will surprise and delight our customers, instead of fiction books that can be found in high street booksellers as well as supermarkets."
