Big Green opening this weekend

The Big Green Bookshop, the new north London independent which emerged from the closure of the Wood Green branch of Waterstone's, will finally open on Saturday. Just 23 days after they received the keys to the shop on Brampton Park Road, owners and ex-Waterstone's staff Simon Key and Tim West will host a "community based opening" featuring a range of author visits to the shop. Among the authors who will be talking to customers and signing books will be Caro Fraser, Rosemary Furber and Graham Marks.

"We've had an incredible amount of support from people," said Key. "It's nice to finally be in control. We have been relying on other people for months and the moment we became in control we've been fine."

The shop will stock 8,000 titles, which will include a multicultural section to reflect Wood Green's diverse population base. The children's section will be age-ranged between pre-school, primary and secondary reading. Key said that the store would also focus on science fiction, a popular genre at the old Waterstone's branch. He added that the shop will launch a transactional website next month.

It has been seven months since the Wood Green Waterstone's closed, sparking an online petition objecting to its closure.
