Giglets up for entrepreneurial award
12.02.08 Tom Tivnan
Giglets, a Glasgow-based start-up independent children's publisher run by university students, has been shortlisted for the HSBC Bank Unipreneurs Awards.
The publisher was founded just five months ago by eight students from Glasgow Caledonian University and Strathclyde University, with an aim to incorporate the works of Robert Burns into the curriculum of primary school children nationwide in fun and innovative ways.
Its first book was Louise Bennett and Fiona Morton's Tam'O Haggis, an adaptation of the classic Burns' poem "Tam O'Shanter". Written in simple English but drawing upon Burns' original language, the book is available with an audio CD for visually impaired children.
The awards, backed by HSBC and the government in association with the National Council for Graduate Entrepreneurship (NCGE), aim to boost entrepreneurship among students. The overall winner will be decided at a gala evening at BAFTA on 23rd April 2008, when five finalists will be quizzed live on stage by a panel of experts about their business and why they deserve the first prize of £20,000.
