Stewart frontrunner for sports award
04.02.08 Alison Flood
Jackie Stewart has emerged as the 5/2 favourite with Ladbrokes to win the best autobiography award at the British Sports Book Awards 2008 in March. Stewart's Winning Is Not Enough (Headline) is just in front of Sid Waddell's Bellies and Bullseyes (Ebury) and Lawrence Dallaglio's It's In The Blood (Headline), which are both at 3/1 with Ladbrokes.
Bobby Charlton's My Manchester United Years (Headline) is at 5/1, Joe Calzaghe's No Ordinary Joe (Century) is at 8/1 and Neil Warnock's Made In Sheffield (Hodder) is at 12/1. Ladbrokes anticipates that the race for the main prize will be the closest in the six-year history of the awards.
Ladbrokes spokesman David Williams said: "We're always terrified of getting wiped out by canny punters who know more about these books than the bookies. It's happened in the past and could well happen again. We bookmakers are heartless and try to avoid emotion at all costs. But even we were moved by Sir Jackie Stewart's tales of triumph and tragedy. He's a worthy favourite."
The winner will be announced at the National Sporting Club's Cafe Royal headquarters in London on 18th March.
