New home for GBS

Grantham Book Services is to move its entire distribution and client services to a larger site in May. The Random House Group-owned third party distributor, which currently distributes 18m books a year on behalf of 40 independent publishers, is moving to a 350,000 sq ft distribution centre in Grantham on 1st March. The site was previously run by TDG, a logistics company.

GBS said the move was prompted by "an extended period of growth", with its client base up 25% over the past 12 months.

A project team has been appointed to manage the transfer to the new site, and consultations have begun with client publishers. GBS said the transfer of client stock would be managed on a carefully phased basis, and there would be a period of dual running of both sites to ensure a smooth transition.

The move is expected to be completed by September 2008.

Random House Distribution m.d. Mark Williams said: "This move represents a major investment in GBS. We have been looking for a site for several months now and TDG was the obvious choice. Our priority was to find somewhere of the right size in or around Grantham so that our highly valued and experienced workforce can move with the business.

"The move is purely on a physical basis and we will be replicating our existing IT and systems infrastructure at our new site. We already have a management team in place to ensure a seamless transfer to our new home and I'm confident that this new phase in GBS's development will lead to even more opportunities to offer existing and new clients an unparalleled level of service and commitment."
