Story time for Borders
28.01.08 Graeme Neill
Borders has launched a series of "Storytime" sessions to celebrate the National Year of Reading. The initiative will see the children's buying team choose a book every other week, which will then be read across all stores on Saturday or Sunday, along with a suggested activity for children to participate in.
Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury's We're Going on a Bear Hunt (Walker Books) was the first book to be read to children last weekend. The events will be supported by publishing material such as bookmarks, stickers and activity sheets. Authors and illustrators will be invited to attend specific events instore.
The next two books chosen by Borders' children's team are Aliens Love Underpants by Claire Freedman (Simon & Schuster) and Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak (Red Fox).
Individual stores will be allowed to choose their own book to read for the alternate weeks. "We believe wholeheartedly that a passion for books is encouraged not just by reading them but sharing them too, and this is a great way to foster a greater love of reading and help inspire the book lovers of the future," said Becky Stradwick, senior buyer for children's books at Borders UK.
