Regan and News Corp settle lawsuit

Judith Regan and Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation, parent company of HarperCollins, have settled the former publisher's lawsuit, which claimed among other things, sexual discrimination and breach of contract, and asked for $100m in damages. Financial terms of the settlement were not released, but News Corp said in a statement that the settlement was confidential with no admission of liability by any party.

Regan filed her lawsuit in November, almost a year after she was fired from her position as publisher of her own imprint at HarperCollins. At the time, Regan's controversial project, O J Simpson's If I Did It, has just been cancelled and she had plans to release the "inventive" 7: The Mickey Mantle Novel, by Peter Golenbock. Reports also came out saying Regan made anti-Semitic comments to HarperCollins lawyers, which Regan denied, and News Corp commented on in the statement released last week.

"After carefully considering the matter, we accept Ms. Regan's position that she did not say anything that was anti-Semitic in nature, and further believe that Ms. Regan is not anti-Semitic," News Corp said. "Ms. Regan is a talented publisher who created many award-winning and bestselling books during her twelve and a half years at the company. News Corp thanks Ms. Regan for her outstanding contributions and wishes her continued success."

"I am grateful for the opportunity to have worked with so many gifted people and am looking forward to my next venture," Regan said.
