Arcadia on buying spree
18.12.07 John Ryan
Princess Diana returns from the dead to minister to an injured Prince Harry in Emma Tennant's latest novel for Arcadia. Diana: The Ghost Biography was signed for a four-figure sum and follows Tennant's The Autobiography of the Queen.
The deal for world English rights was struck with Paul Marsh of the Marsh Agency. The book is written with Hilary Bailey and will be published in 2008. Arcadia said that this autumn's The Autobiography of the Queen, in which her majesty disappears to St Lucia, prompted letters from royals including the Duke of Edinburgh and the Prince of Wales.
The deal was part of a buying spree for Arcadia, which also acquired UK and Commonwealth rights in The Conversion by US author Joseph Olshan for a four-figure sum. Publication is scheduled for 2009. Rachel Calder at the Sayle Agency brokered the deal.
As part of its EuroCrime series, Arcadia has also paid a good four-figure sum for UK and Commonwealth rights in The Major Shareholder and Che Killed Himself by Greek writer Petros Markaris. Rights were obtained from Susanne Bauknecht at Diogenes Verlag, Zurich, with publication slated for 2009.
UK rights to Barry Maitland's forthcoming novel No Trace, in the same genre, have also been acquired by Arcadia from David Higham on behalf of Wenona Byrne at Australian Literary Management, with a four-figure sum once more changing hands. The book will appear in 2008.
