Penguin closes retail marketing department
18.12.07 Alison Flood
Penguin has announced that it is to close its retail marketing department, which was set up two years ago. The closure means that group retail marketing director James Kellow will leave the company at the end of the year. Penguin is currently in a consultation period with the other three members of the department.
Kellow joined Penguin five years ago, initially as sales director. He was previously at Simon and Schuster and before that at Fourth Estate.
He said: "I'm incredibly sad to be leaving Penguin, and so many great colleagues, at such an exciting time for the business. I've enjoyed five terrific years at Penguin, but it's now clear that the many beneficial initiatives and practices we have instigated since December 2005 within the group retail marketing team can be taken forward within the original sales and marketing structures.
"I believe that publishers and retailers have more opportunities than ever to work together in more collaborative ways to engage readers. I look forward to finding a new role in the industry where I can bring my sales and marketing experience to bear."
Mike Symons, Penguin group sales director, added: "James has worked incredibly hard to lead and create change as retail marketing director over the last two years and has introduced new ideas and initiatives that will take the business forward in the future. He has also been a great colleague and senior member of the sales team and he takes with him our thanks and best wishes."
