Crockatt & Powell to open opposite Pan
12.12.07 Graeme Neill
London indie Crockatt & Powell is to open a second branch in west London facing the Pan Bookshop, which is closing next month. Co-owner Adam Powell said an offer for the property, which is on Fulham Road and has 800 square feet of trading space, has been accepted and the store should open in early March. Crockatt & Powell opened its first store in Lower Marsh, Waterloo in 2005.
"Myself and Matthew [Crockatt] both worked in the Pan Bookshop so we know the area and the market," said Powell. "With the nearby Old Brompton Road Waterstone's also closing soon that's quite a large part of west London that will be without a bookshop.
"It will be quite a step up in terms of rent but we know that a market is there. It's a gift-wrapped opportunity for us."
Macmillan, the owners of the Pan Bookshop, said "tough market conditions" were its reason for closing the indie next month.
