HMV unveils computer game store
HMV is the last man standing after an annus horribilis for the UK's traditional "high street" record, DVD and book stores, reports the Telegraph. The chain is now pinning its hopes on computer gamers and has unveiled the latest stage of its transformation from "just a record store" to an all-singing-all-dancing entertainment venue--an annexe for computer game enthusiasts, with sleek black walls, 70 whirring computers and giant plasma screens.
However, in order to ensure that it doesn't go the way of its rivals, chief executive Simon Fox knows that the company has to adapt or die. "Big picture, if you look over the next three years, what we have said is that the CD market will decline by 10 per cent per annum, so we need to replace that with higher-growth categories: games, technologies, band merchandise, and this is part of that. We need to respond," says chief executive Simon Fox.
