Macmillan takes on Persephone

Persephone Books is launching a trade list of its bestselling titles next April, and has signed a sales and distribution deal with Pan Macmillan for the list. Until now Persephone has sold its titles, reprinted classics by 20th-century writers, entirely through its mail order business and its central London shop.
The Persephone Classics will be a paperback list, rejacketed from the publisher's trademark grey design to a new full-colour look. The books are also designed to lie flat when open, which Persephone says is a unique feature for British paperbacks.
Ed Ripley, Pan Macmillan sales director for client publishing, said: "We are delighted to be selling the Persephone list next year. Their republishing of near-lost classics has proved to be a very successful formula via their 10,000 mail order customers and London shop. We are very confident that we can take these lists to a mainstream audience and introduce new readers to the delights of Persephone books."
