Denis Johnson novel wins National Book Award
Denis Johnson has won the US National Book Award for fiction for his Vietnam War Novel Tree of Smoke.The book, which is published by Picador in the UK, beat fellow shortlisted titles Mischa Berlinski's Fieldwork, Lydia Davis' Varieties of Disturbance, Joshua Ferris's Then We Came to the End and Jim Shepard's Like You’d Understand, Anyway.
In non-fiction, Tim Weiner took home the prize for Legacy of Ashes: The History of the CIA (Allen Lane); Robert Hass's Time and Materials won the poetry category; and Sherman Alexie's The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian won "Young People's Literature'.
The prizes were awarded yesterday evening (14th November), and every winner received USD 10,000.
