14.11.07 Alison Flood
Sainsbury's said this morning that it was continuing to grow its share of the book market, as it unveiled a 4.7% growth in total retail sales to £9,998m over the 28 weeks to 6th October. The supermarket says it is developing a specialist non-food team, and that non-food growth "continues to run at over twice the rate of food growth".
Like-for-like sales growth at the supermarket over the period, excluding fuel but including VAT, was up 4%, while underlying profit before tax was up 27% to £240 million compared to £189m in the same period a year ago.
Sainsbury's said: "Core ranges such as newspapers, magazines and stationery performed strongly and the company continues to grow market share in areas such as computer games and books."
Looking ahead, it revealed that it has signed an exclusive deal with Australian chef Donna Hay to launch her own line of branded gifts in Sainsbury's stores. There are 15 products in the range, including gift boxes and cookery books, which will be available in 113 stores.
