M&B tests paranormal romance market
The popular US genre of paranormal romance is making ever-greater inroads into the UK market, with Mills & Boon the latest publisher to jump on the vampire-loving bandwagon.
From next March, M&B will publish one "Nocturne" title a month as a sub-series in its romantic suspense series "Intrigue", all priced at £3.10. The series--which will feature "dark and sensual tales of paranormal romance"--launches with Raintree: Inferno by Linda Howard, the first in a trilogy
that has featured on the New York Times bestseller list. Packaging will emphasise the paranormal elements of the storylines.
M&B acknowledges that "the size of the opportunity in the fantasy/romance genre is still somewhat limited" but believes that there is an appetite for paranormal romance in the market, with Piatkus authors Keri Arthur and Sherrilyn Kenyon selling on average around 3,500 copies per book according to Nielsen BookScan.
If Nocturne proves successful, M&B will launch it as a standalone series.
