Greek tale wins Daily Mail competition
A historical novel set in 19th century Greece has won the Daily Mail First Novel Competition, securing a £30,000 publishing deal with Transworld. A Dark Enchantment by Roland Vernon beat five other shortlisted titles to the prize, from a total of 800 entries submitted. The book, which tells of a young English photographer who travels to Greece and finds love and intrigue at the remote home of a maverick landowner, will be published under the Black Swan imprint in April.
Transworld author Joanne Harris, one of the judges, described the winning novel as "a rousing, red blooded tale with colourful characters."
Also shortlisted were Max Adams, Sandra Rigby, Emma Louise Oram, Julia Widdows and Giuseppe Argenio. The other judges were author Lee Child, Daily Mail literary editor Jane Mays, Transworld senior publishing director Francesca Liversidge, and The Bookseller’s Benedicte Page.
